Jharkhand is a state in eastern India. It was created in 2000 after carving out the mineral rich southern region of Bihar. Jharhkand shares its border with the states of Bihar to the north, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh to the west, Orissa to the south, and West Bengal to the east.
The industrial city of Ranchi is its capital. Jharkhand means land of jharies (bushes). Hindi and English are primary languages, though several other local and tribal dialects are spoken throughout the state. 10% of the people speak Bengali. |
