Punjab is situated in the northwest of India, it is bordered by Pakistan on the west, the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir on the north, Himachal Pradesh on its northeast and Haryana and Rajasthan to its south.

The word " Punjab " is orginated from two Persian words Panj and Aab. Panj means five and ab means water. This name was probably  given to this land possibly in an era when this region came into close contact with . The Punjab was known as land of five rivers because of the five rivers that ran through it. They are Indus , Ravi , Beas , Sutlaj and Ghaggar.Most of Punjab is a fertile plain; toward the southeast one finds semi-arid and desert landscape; a belt of undulating hills extends along the northeast at the foot of the Himalayas.

Four rivers, the Ravi, Beas, Sutlej and Ghaggar flow across the state in a southwesterly direction. They have numerous small and seasonal tributaries. Punjab is also watered by an extensive canal system.

In 1947 when was partitioned, the larger half of Punjab went to . In 1966 the Indian smaller half was further divided into three: Punjab , Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

The state has three major seasons:
Hot weather (April to June) when temperature rises as high as 110F.
Rainy season (July to September)- Average rainfall is between 96 cm in  sub mountainous region and 46 cm in the plains.
Cold weather (October to March)- Temperature goes down as low as 40F.
